Steven Rosenblum For Florida House - Memorial Day Message

Memorial Day Message

As this long holiday weekend begins, it is important that we remember that Memorial Day is about so much more than going to the beach, having a barbecue and getting together with friends and family. It is about remembering those that have given their lives to ensure the freedoms we all take for granted.

Memorial Day was first celebrated on May 30th, 1868. But at that time it was called Decoration Day because it was observed by decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. It was first observed as "Memorial Day" in 1882. It was officially named Memorial Day, by Federal law, in 1967.

Many of you may have known all of these facts about this important national holiday, some may not. But are your children or grandchildren learning about this in school?

Our children are either not being taught American history, or are being taught a distorted history, by a public education system that is dominated by a liberal, progressive agenda.

On a day when we're supposed to remember the brave members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, how many of our children know about the history of World War II? How many can tell you the historical significance of December 7th, 1941? How many can tell you why the U.S.S. Indianapolis was so important to ending the war? Do they know what happened on the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2nd, 1945?

Our current president, who considers himself a scholar, once said, "I'm always worried about using the word "victory" because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur". Emperor Hirohito was not on the deck of the U.S.S. Missouri on September 2nd, 1945 and never surrendered to General MacArthur. If the Commander-in-Chief is so painfully unaware of our nation's history, it begs the question: What are our children being taught today?

We need to fix our education system and we need representatives in Tallahassee that will fight to take it back from the Federal government and the progressives, at every level, that have been rewriting our history for decades.

Think about this as you enjoy your weekend and remember those that have paid the ultimate price to protect our nation and our freedoms.
